How do you turn a garage into a studio?

A studio depends on good light, the right sound and enough power.

A builder fitting a new window frame.

Light to work by

The garage door is replaced by an insulated wall with a window. Painters and makers often want more daylight, so where the roof allows, a roof light can go in too. Extras like this are priced on your quote.

A builder fitting insulation into a ceiling.

Keeping the sound in

For music, the walls and ceiling can take extra sound insulation, with a solid door and sealed gaps. The heavier the build and the fewer the gaps, the less sound escapes. We talk through how loud you play at the visit.

An electrician fitting a wall socket.

Power for the kit

Amps, screens, lights and sewing machines all want sockets. A kiln or other big machine may need a circuit of its own. Every new circuit is tested and certified.

A plumber fitting the pipes under a sink.

A sink for brushes and clay

A small sink saves trips to the kitchen. It costs least when it sits near the house drains, so we plan the layout around them.

A hand turning a radiator valve.

Fresh air while you work

A room you spend hours in needs a window that opens and trickle vents for background air. For paints, glazes or solder, an extractor fan helps too.

An inspector checking the inside of a house.

Signed off at the end

Building control inspects the work and issues a completion certificate, so the studio counts as a real room when you sell.

What fits in a garage studio?

A smaller single garage is about 2.2 by 4.7 metres once the walls are lined. That takes a desk for screens or a keyboard, a big table to work at, and a wall of shelves.

Need more room for an easel, a wheel or a band? A double garage doubles the floor space. We measure up and plan it with you.

Can I convert my garage into a studio without planning permission?

Planning permission: usually not

92.2%approved when people applied

A studio for your own use inside the garage rarely needs an application. Where people applied for any garage conversion, councils approved 92.2% across eight West Midlands councils. A studio flat or a business with visitors is different.

Building regulations: almost always needed

£570

A studio is a room you spend hours in, so building control checks the insulation, window, ventilation and wiring before signing it off. Solihull Council's £570 fee is already in our prices.

Planning figures: 3,630 applications to eight West Midlands councils, 2016 to October 2026, from council records collected by PlanIt. Most conversions need no application at all. Fee from Solihull Council's 2026 to 2027 fee list.

Questions about garage studios

Loud instruments, a kiln or big machines? Mention them in your enquiry and we will plan the room around them.

Ask us a question
Can I convert my garage into a music studio?

Yes. It is built as a warm, dry room like any other, with extra sound insulation in the walls and ceiling if you play loud. Drums and amplifiers need the most, so tell us what you play and we will plan around it.

Can I convert my garage into a studio flat?

Not without planning permission. A flat with its own kitchen and bathroom, lived in separately, is a new home in the eyes of the council. A studio for your own use, or an annexe for family, stays part of your house. Garage annexes.

Can I see clients or run classes there?

Using it for your own work at home is usually fine. Regular clients, students or customers visiting can count as a business use that needs permission. One local application was for exactly that, a one-to-one fitness studio.

Can I have a kiln in a garage studio?

Often, yes. A kiln usually needs its own electrical circuit, good ventilation and space around it. We check the power supply and the layout at the visit.

Can I keep part of the garage for storage?

Yes. An insulated, fire-resisting wall goes across, with the studio at the back and storage at the front. It usually starts from around £9,000. Half garage conversions.

How long does a garage studio conversion take?

Two to four weeks on site for most single garages. Extra sound insulation or a roof light adds a little time. The visit is the time to ask how long yours will take.
